Transferable skills for IT pros: Change your job

IT professionals who find themselves out of work amid the global economic recession could wind up working as stock equity analysts, insurance underwriters or health-care administrators, according to the author of a recent book on alternative technology career paths.

Want to “Do” Tech or Teach Tech?

The press release for a new book called “200 Best Jobs for College Graduates” included some IT salary information. I was a bit surprised by the low starting salaries. My in-college daughter wants to be a teacher, and the starting salary for a brand new college graduate in the district that employs my wife is $45,000. That beats all but one of the “best” jobs in the press release.

Landing interviews in a tough hiring market

While market realities have indeed made it more difficult to secure job interviews, they don't affect every job seeker equally. The candidates who approach their search in a persistent, strategic and positive way are the ones most likely to be taking advantage of those opportunities.

Starting the New Year with a Bang!

I did it again this New Year’s eve. I waited in line for an hour to get into Saint John the Devine for the annual concert for peace. The idea for the Concert for Peace was originally developed by Leonard Bernstein. He chose Copeland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man”, as the opening piece and it has been used since the 1980s.

For those who make it to the top of the IT ladder, the pay can be great. But most IT executives are losing ground as a result of the economic recession, according to a new report released today by Janco Associates Inc.

The 2009 tech career planner

Although tech jobs are under increasing pressure, the reality is that the technology jobs market overall is still doing better than the market for other types of jobs. That doesn't mean you're immune from layoffs, stagnant salaries, or increasing workloads, but it does mean you have more options than many other workers -- if you're willing to be flexible.

The most successful project teams represent a diversity of ages, cultural backgrounds and technology experience. Younger employees, or "millennials," for example, come to the workplace with "a whole different life experience, especially with regard to technology in their personal lives," says Accenture managing director Gary Curtis, who leads the company's 8,500-person technology consulting organization.
